The many faces of Brugge

We love to sing with the birds, to sleep in flower fields and to swim in hidden lakes in endless forests. But we also love cities. The nightlife, the colourful lights, the graffities, the street musicians, the meeting of centuries of architecture and the energy of thousands of people. Many times we heard that Brugge was one of the most beautiful cities. So we decided to have a look.

Already the way to Brugge was an adventure. Actually we wanted to go there a few days before. First a big storm stopped us, then our car did not start. But this is another story. In the end against all odds on Sunday we finally made it.

In the morning we woke up still in Zeeland, Netherlands. Next to us colourful ships were swimming on the ocean.

Then we got ready and took a hot shower in a big camping. Cool tip for wild campers: you can very easy use the shower and the dryer for clothes in big camping places. Then we wanted to start our car. And it again did not start. We had the same problem a few days before: a cable from the start engine always jumped down. We were thinking that for some reason the universe does not want us to be in Brugge. But then the guy that parked next to us, knew where this cable belongs and helped us. Thank you again for this.

We were like flying on the road. It was sunny, was easy to find free parking close to the city center and already the houses on the ring around the old town were really beautiful. Perfect start for discovering a city. Well, the sun was very fast hiding again, but it did not take away our mood. The architecture was still breathtaking, and we really liked that a lot of people used bicycles.

We were making a few hours walk to get an impression of the city. In the beginning we were even in the mood for looking for an apartment and spend a few months in Brugge. We liked that the city seemed alive, with graffities….

…little houses…

…charming channels…

…and full of flowers.

But Brugge lost us, when we arrived to the main square. It was huge and the architecture, like in other parts of the city, was impressive.

But also it was really touristic. It was full of people and one expensive restaurant, fancy coffee and souvenir shop was following the other. “Oh, no”, we were thinking to ourselves, “another sold out city.”

But you cannot buy love.

Already on this one afternoon we realized that Brugge has many different faces. Finally we could get a break from the crowd of people an have a rest in a beautiful park next to a cathedral.

Then we wanted to eat fried potatoes. Zoé the first time tried them in the Netherlands a few days before our visit to Brugge. But unfortunately we did not find a place that we liked. Either they looked too fancy or too broken. So we went back to our car and said goodbye to Brugge. A long drive was waiting for us, to the coast of France. But the view that we saw from our five star hotel room on four wheels was worth it.

We wish you a beautiful time!
Love and kisses,
Zoé and Joshua
